Burke County

Burke County is located along Interstate 40 between McDowell, Avery, Caldwell, Catawba, Rutherford and Cleveland counties.  Morganton is the major city in the county.  The Blue Ridge Parkway skirts the northern tip of Burke County.  South Mountains State Park is located in the county.

Stocked Waters

Henry Fork Creek (lower South Mountains State Park line downstream to SR 1919 @ Ivy Creek)(3 miles)* Notes to come soon, check back!

Carrol Creek (Game Land Portion above SR 1405)(1 mile)* Small

Linville River (Game Land below Blue Ridge Parkway to Lake James and 1st. Bridge SR 1223 below Lake James Powerhouse to Muddy Creek) (1 mile (below Powerhouse) and through Gorge)* access for disabled anglers, lower section is posted on one side of river, further down you go the better the fishing.   BE CAREFUL when the siren sounds get out of the water, it will rise quickly!!!!  Tough access in gorge section, doesn't fish as good as it looks.

Delayed Harvest Waters

Jacob's Fork Creek (Shinny Creek to South Mountains State Park Boundary) (1 mile)* access for disabled anglers, heavy fishing pressure!

Henry Fork Creek (portion on South Mountains State Park )* Nice stream small fish!

Wild Trout Waters

All waters located on South Mountains State Park except the main stream of Jacob Fork between the mouth of Shinny Creek and the lower park boundary and Henry Fork and it's tributaries.

Nettle Branch (game lands portion)

Upper Creek (entire creek)* not listed in the regs book, easy access, moderately pressure, like always get away from access points for best fishing.  Nice gorge section that produces some very nice wild browns and bows.

Steele Creek (entire creek)* not listed in regs book, easy access, fairly heavy pressure.  Best fishing above falls.

Shinney Creek (entire creek)* small but look for stockers moving up from Jacob's Fork.
